Our mission is to offer a safe space and opportunities for healing for the betterment of the horses, our participants and the community. Our equine-assisted programs aim to empower Veterans and others diagnosed with PTSD, positively affecting their cognitive, physical and social well-being.

Vision

At WSS, we believe that horses are truly a gift for all of humanity because of the incredible healing abilities, compassion, strength and, the valuable lessons they share with us. These creatures deserve a lifetime of love and respect, for which they will receive here at WSS.

Values

WSS is based on four simple core values:

Happy, Healthy, Safe and Loved.

None of which are more important than the other.

Delissa’s Story

Untitled

Whispering Sands Sanctuary is a nonprofit founded by Delissa Dawn.

Delissa grew up in Oklahoma learning about horses at a very early age. She has been riding horses for 48 years now with a background in Competitive Horse Showing and teaching others how to ride and work with horses. During her time in the military, Delissa was subjected to military sexual trauma (MST) and is a disabled veteran diagnosed with PTSD and major anxiety disorders.Delissa spent several years experiencing alcoholism and depression which ultimately led her to become homeless in the Long Beach area. During her time living in her car, she made three goals. Buy land, start a ranch and, provide Equine Therapy. That was just four years ago. Through her experience with horses she has learned how to use the tools that horses provide to live a healthier life. Delissa always says, “regardless of how perfect my life appears, it will only be perfect when I am able to share with others.” This motto is a simple reminder that she lives by and takes to heart.
